01
Cleanup/remediation training:
General hazardous-waste site workers typically require 40 hours of initial training plus three days of supervised field experience. Certain qualifying limited-exposure roles use a 24-hour course plus one day of field experience. Covered cleanup workers need eight-hour annual refreshers; supervisors have additional training requirements. A course certificate alone does not demonstrate completion of the entire qualification process.
02
Emergency-response role:
Awareness, operations, hazardous materials technician, specialist and incident commander are different functions. A cleanup worker with a 40-hour HAZWOPER course is not automatically qualified as an emergency-response technician. Emergency-response refresher and competency requirements should be tied to the assigned role.
03
Respirator clearance and fit testing:
Required respirator use generally needs a medical evaluation before fit testing or use. Tight-fitting respirators require fit testing before initial use, at least annually, and when the respirator make, model, style or size changes. Document the specific respirator—not simply “fit tested.” Do not imply every medical clearance expires annually.
